Senator Attempts Humor, Makes Fool of Self

Not every speech can be the Gettysburg Address. But every speech does have the potential to be a rhetorical train wreck like this going-viral commencement speech by Republican Senator Ben Sasse.

Investigators are still on the scene, but we know the cause of the accident already: At a moment when kids actually need sincere leadership from a government official, the vain and tone-deaf middle-aged senator had needs of his own. And either his speechwriter failed to warn him away from this—or Sasse failed to listen.
Perhaps a speechwriter can show this cautionary video to the next would-be sidesplitting senator to prevent another senseless tragedy. —DM
