‘Pleasure instead of poison’: Behold Liz Carpenter’s happy view of political speechwriting

Liz Carpenter, the late speechwriter to LBJ, tells a number of yarns in this C-SPAN video, including the classic about how Johnson once crossed out a quote from Aristotle, and, reasoning his audience didn’t know Aristotle, inserted, “As my dear ol’ daddy used to say ….”

The half hour amounts to nothing less than an introduction to a speechwriting heritage. Thanks much to habitual VSOTD.com contributor Neil Hrab for putting us onto it.
