The trouble with politics these days

“Politics is so expensive that it takes lots of money even to get beat with.”

“Formerly a candidate, unless possessed of popular gifts, did but little speaking. Latterly he has been expected to take the field and stay in it fighting all the time.”

As timely as these quotes sound, the first one came from Will Rogers, who died in 1935. And the second is from Lord Bryce’s The American Commonwealth, published in 1888.
