The writer is dead, but he’s still feeling good about the future

"I'm a turning point in intellectual history," says Colin Wilson. Well, aren't we all.

At 82, writer Colin Wilson died last week. But he hasnโ€™t lost his self-confidence.

Acclaimed at 24 when he published The Outsider, he remained convinced of his own greatness. โ€œI suspect that I am probably the greatest writer of the 20th century,โ€ he told The Guardian in 2006. โ€œIn 500 yearsโ€™ time, theyโ€™ll say, โ€˜Wilson was a genius,โ€™ because Iโ€™m a turning point in intellectual history.โ€

Itโ€™s easy to laugh Wilson's hubris. But then, who among us doesnโ€™t believe we areโ€”or could becomeโ€”a turning point in intellectual history? As my father used to say was the universal human motto, โ€œThere will never be another me.โ€
