You’ve seen a book-burning, but you’ve never seen a speech-burning

“President Wilson is deceiving the world when he appears as the prophet of democracy,” read the sign held by members of the National Women’s Party as they burned texts of Wilson’s speeches in a “Watch Fire of Freedom” in front of the White House, Jan. 1, 1919.

“President Wilson has opposed those who demand democracy for this country,” the sign said, referring to the still unpassed Susan B. Anthony Amendment for women’s suffrage. “He is responsible for the disenfranchisment of millions of Americans. We in America know this. The world will find him out.”
