VIDEO: In presidential speechwriting, “it’s not about the words”

In a new video on “Becoming a Bill Clinton Speechwriter,” Michael Waldman, former chief speechwriter for President Clinton, says he got the post not because of his โ€œliquid proseโ€ but because of his policy experience.

โ€œWhen a president speaks, itโ€™s not about the words. Itโ€™s not about them sounding good.Itโ€™s about the policy. And presidential speeches are where presidential policy and politics come together.โ€

Whether you agree with that claim or not, this video is worth a gander, for a dramatic example that Waldman offers in its support.
