VIDEO: In presidential speechwriting, “it’s not about the words”

In a new video on “Becoming a Bill Clinton Speechwriter,” Michael Waldman, former chief speechwriter for President Clinton, says he got the post not because of his “liquid prose” but because of his policy experience.

“When a president speaks, it’s not about the words. It’s not about them sounding good. It’s about the policy. And presidential speeches are where presidential policy and politics come together.”

Whether you agree with that claim or not, this video is worth a gander, for a dramatic example that Waldman offers in its support.
