Mario Cuomo’s son doesn’t use speechwriters

Andrew Cuomo says he writes his own speeches, and leans on aids for research and "idea development"

New York Governor and son of rhetorical royalty Andrew Cuomo says, “I don’t really have speechwriters.”

Which must have come to a surprise to his speechwriter, Jacob Lieberman.

Or maybe not. In a Wall Street Journal piece on the occasion of his fourth State of the State address, Cuomo says he does lots of the heavy lifting himself, writing the script in longhand and then winnowing it down to key phrases.

Instead of speechwriters, Cuomo says, “I have people who help with the research and the idea development.”
