Do you make the most of the client access you get?

A former Apple speechwriter describes how she squeezed every drop of insight from every moment with an exec.

Speechwriters and clients: They always struggle to make enough time together—but do they make the most of time they have? In an interview in The Atlantic about her years as chief speechwriter at Apple, writer Jayne Benjulian said she would arrive for executive interviews “ultra-prepared after hours and hours of research—much like journalists, which is why I think journalists can be trained to be great speechwriters. I would come with a tape recorder and a notebook, and I would ask questions, take notes, and tape. Then I would listen to the tape over and over again, because I wanted to understand the patterns of speech, the funny moments, what was important, what was stressed, what the ideas were.” —DM
